Annie Dooley, Head Girl, ponders her political future

Our Head Girl, Annie Dooley, reports on her recent visit to the House of Commons to celebrate International Women’s Day : ‘In today’s UK parliament, only 22% of MPs are women, which is surprising considering women account for just over 50% of the electorate populace. This fact preyed on my mind as I shadowed Mary McLeod, Conservative Member of Parliament for Brentford and Isleworth.  Over the course of a fascinating day, I observed at first hand a number of informative and inspiring speakers, including the Speaker of the House, John Bercow, MPs from across all political parties and Air Vice Marshall Sue Gray, one of the highest ranking serving female officers in the RAF. All of the women who spoke were brimming with confidence, intelligence and strength, qualities that are not always evident from the male Members of Parliament ! As I head towards my final ‘A’ level exams, before taking up my place at university to study Politics and Philosophy, I am so thankful to have had this amazing opportunity to learn from such inspirational female role models.  Who knows, maybe one day, it will be me as our local MP …'
