Gunnersbury Catholic School

Rowing Club

"Gunnersbury Catholic School is a thriving, vibrant and caring learning community within which pupils are stretched intellectually and foster a love of learning, whilst feeling valued, happy and safe" (OFSTED)

Gunnersbury has for many years enjoyed strong links with the London Youth Rowing Association (LYR) and the school was delighted to receive an invitation to participate in a five year project that will see our boys develop their skills in this most demanding and respected of sporting disciplines.  Following initial indoor sessions that cover  basic rowing techniques, water safety, tidal flows and river etiquette, budding Matthew Pinsents and Steve Redgraves move on to enjoy rowing in 4 man, 2 man and single sculling boats.  With rowing having taken centre stage at the London Olympics, the school is very pleased to be able to add yet another discipline to the school’s already impressive sports curriculum.

In the spring of 2013, the school was designated an indoor rowing hub, accredited by LYR and, as such, we are in a very privileged position to able to provide free rowing coaching to club members after school. LYR set up the programme with the aim of increasing participation rates within the discipline at every level of competition from recreational to potential Olympic standard. Boys have grasped this opportunity and every week, pupils from Year 8, 9 and 10 visit the University of London boathouse in Chiswick to spend time on the water with specialised coaches.
