Gunnersbury Catholic School

Learning support

"Gunnersbury Catholic School is a thriving, vibrant and caring learning community within which pupils are stretched intellectually and foster a love of learning, whilst feeling valued, happy and safe" (OFSTED)

Gunnersbury provides pupils who have Special Educational Needs with a broad and balanced curriculum which aims to ensure that they have full access to the National Curriculum.

Statemented students are allotted teaching assistants who work to meet the requirements of their Statements.  Students with special needs are mainly supported in the classroom.   Throughout Key Stage 4, colleagues from the Learning Support department continue to offer guidance, help and appropriate teaching to targeted pupils who have a statement of educational need.  This support is overwhelmingly provided in class.  In exceptional circumstances, pupils will be withdrawn from lessons for short periods.  In Years 10 and 11 there is continued liaison with external agencies and in Year 11 there is a particular emphasis on planning for life and opportunities beyond GCSE.

In exceptional circumstances, and with the support of parents/guardians, it may be appropriate to consider GCSE exam concessions for a pupil.  An application is only likely to be successful where a documented history of support and the specific criteria of the exam boards are met.

Parental interest and support is highly valued and close co-operation between home and school is essential.

The EAL (English as an Additonal Language) department provides specialist English Language support for those pupils whose first language is not English. In the EAL department, we value the importance of students’ first language and recognise that being bilingual is an advantage in terms of cognitive development. However, we also recognise how being bilingual can affect students’ language development particularly in the area of writing.

Pupils’ skills are assessed in speaking, reading and writing and a literacy programme is set up to meet their individual needs. Depending on the level of English, students may receive weekly individual, or small group one to one lessons to develop their knowledge of English grammar and fluency in reading, writing and speaking. This support enables pupils to access the curriculum across the subject range and ensures progress through Key Stages 3 and 4. The department also supports EAL pupils at GCSE level with coursework preparation.
