Founded in 1932 by Father William Roche, Gunnersbury Catholic School began as a small school at St. John’s Church in Brentford. Over the years, Gunnersbury has grown into one of the most successful Catholic boys Schools in the country with students achieving superb GCSE and A-Level results. This year on year success has allowed our students to study at some of the best universities in the country including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, Kings College to name a few.

Our Broad Curriculum

Mr Christian Parker, Deputy Headteacher, shares the success of our curriculum and the significance of our Specialist Science Status:

Gunnersbury Catholic School school provides a broad curriculum from Year 7.  As a Specialist Science School, we are renowned for not only our fantastic science results, but also our fascinating experiments, our teachers wealth of experience and the passion they hold for their subject.  Throughout their curriculum our pupils experience exciting, immersive, teaching and learning.   Following its completion in June 2021 Gunnersbury boys will benefit from the superb facilities of our brand new sports complex. 

 

The World of Science at Gunnersbury

Reflecting our Specialist Science Status, Science has an integral position in our curriculum:

Through experimentation and enquiry Gunnersbury pupils gain a thoroughly unique and lasting understanding of Science.  As a Specialist Science School we have seven dedicated science laboratories that all year groups have access to.  These laboratories allow for students to gain first-hand experience of practical experiments from Year 7 onwards. The passion and expertise of our science department has built a culture of questioning:  how the world works; what can we do to deepen our own knowledge; how can we help ourselves and the wider society?

 

 

Sport at Gunnersbury

Mr Geoghegan, Head of Year and PE teacher shares what lies beneath our sporting success:

The quality of coaching and breadth of sporting opportunities has enabled so many young men to leave Gunnersbury Catholic School to move on to professional careers in sport.  Significantly sport and its benefits are very much viewed at Gunnersbury as something for all pupils.  We offer a wide and diverse range of sports at Gunnersbury.  Our main winter sport is rugby and students from Year 7 are encouraged to partake in the rugby training after school and be part of the school rugby teams. Throughout Year 7 students will also learn skills in badminton, athletics, fitness and football.  We have a wide range of extra-curricular sports in school and opportunities to join clubs and enter various competitions.

 

 

Music and Creativity

Ms Nutt, Director of Music, provides an insight into the importance of the Arts at our school:

Fostering and supporting creativity are central to our teaching and learning philosophy at Gunnersbury Catholic School.  As such Art, Music and Drama  are significant features of both our curriculum and co-curricular offer.  We are incredibly proud of the range of musical talents within our school community.  From school choirs to guitar ensembles; summer drama productions to our concerts - Gunnersbury has a vast array of musical and creative gifts that we all can enjoy. We look forward to you cultivating  and developing your own skills in this area.

 

 

Living our Faith

Miss Niamh McIlduff, Head of RE and Mr Charlie Stringer, Director of RSE share their insights :

Central to our school is our chapel.  It is here that students pray daily, join together in form group Masses and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.   Every week different year groups are given the opportunity to celebrate Mass together in at our local parish church, St John’s.  Religious Education is at the core of our curriculum at Gunnersbury with students in all years studying this vital subject. We have a strong leadership team of liturgy leaders who organise various whole-school Masses and school events.

 

 

Our Catholic Ethos

Mr Finnegan, Deputy Headteacher  reflects on our Catholic faith which underpins all that we do:

Central to our purpose is our Catholic faith.  Developing pupils' spirituality, their understanding of God and the importance of the common good are the cornerstones of our education at Gunnersbury Catholic School.  Celebrating and sharing in our faith is undoubtedly at the heart of our school.  In addition to our RE curriculum, we endeavour to share the Gospel values by supporting those in need both spiritually and practically through our charity work. This work takes place throughout the year and includes collections of money for example at CAFOD family fast day, collection of essential goods and community Christmas parties during the festive season and all year round visits to our local care homes.

 

Our Amazing Alumini

Past pupil, David Coogan is currently studying Chemistry at Imperial College.  Here he shares the success of his Gunnersbury education:

Gunnersbury past pupils form a very successful set of individuals.  Our alumni are currently studying at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, Kings College, Bristol, UCL… an almost endless list of world-leading universities.  These former students are undertaking undergraduate studies in Medicine, Dentistry, PPE, Law, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, History, English… and so many more life-changing degrees.
